April 13, 2018 NaPoWriMo Challenge Poem: “Enchantment” & Photography By Karla Schultz

Enchantment
for Karla

Remember those pajamas with feet we padded in,
how we sat near the television, clutching
each other in fear when Dorothy’s house
pinned down the first witch and her striped stockings
shriveled? We shivered as the tiny silver
screen shimmered with image after image.

Most magical of all, that sudden wash
of color, of eyes opened at last
to besetting wonder: beauties and dangers.
As I see it, sister, you carry Oz
with you everywhere. Fields of bright poppies
wake you up, and you bring us all to light.

Leslie Schultz

For Karla,

You scatter pixel dust with practiced hand,
transport me to a rare magical land.
The measure of your magic is to show
beauty abounds and seeing makes it grow.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KARLA! MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY!

  1. Yes, those frightening monkeys…I wonder why that was less scary. The one was more something small that harried (Dorothy, surrogate me) but the other was something huge and unfightable that landed a killing blow. I was also terrified, I now remember, of the scene of the sister witch shrieking as she melted. And by the trying to help going wrong for Dorothy–she was accused falsely though she did great damage to the “shadow beast” of the witch and, thereby, protected herself.

Also, when I attended Tintern Church of England School for Girls (prior to having heard of Wordsworth!) the headmistress was named Margaret D. Hamilton!

  2. Stunning photos! Wonderful sister-love poem too! More than those awful legs pinned under the house, for my sister and me it was the flying monkeys! Funny how those moments haunt still! Thank goodness for the company of siblings!

  3. Lovely poem, very tender, and amazing photos. Thank you for sharing. ❤️
